Piano Improvisation
Taught by Janet Miller and Stephanie Hasselbach
Available for students ages three and up, Piano Improvisation classes are included in the Suzuki Piano Program but may also be taken separately as a stand-alone class. For adults, improvising can be a great way to encounter the instrument for the first time or after years of not playing. Experienced pianists will learn new techniques to use in their improvising, and novices will learn the joy of creating sound through discovering simple melodies and sonorities.*
For students enrolled in the Suzuki Piano Program or other instrumental study, improvising provides hands-on experience of music theory concepts and allows the students to create sound freely without criticism or correction. Classes are small enough to accommodate each student at his or her own level, and students learn from watching others at a variety of levels and mixed ages.
Improvisation is taught primarily in classical style with occasional forays into blues and popular styles.
For children’s classes (age 12 and under) it is recommended that enrolling students have some prior instrumental (not necessarily piano) or voice study. Children with no prior musical study will be considered for enrollment after observing classes or lessons in the studio.
Please see the Schedule and Tuition and Fees pages for class times/tuition. Piano Improvisation class meets 11 times per class term and may be joined mid-term.
*Please contact PSPA if you are interested in participating in an adult Improvisation Class.
