Environmental statement of responsibility

At The Philadelphia Suzuki Piano Academy, we believe that our future as humans and as part of the community of life on earth will be the cumulative result of the decisions that each of us makes.

Our intention is not only to minimize the harm caused by our actions, but also to have a positive impact, including spreading information and encouraging others to think about moving toward environmental sustainability.

Choices we have made so far include:

Energy (climate, air pollution):

  1. During our construction/renovation, we installed state of the art thermal insulation and air sealing.

  2. We put in a heating and cooling system with the highest SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) of any currently on the market.

  3. All of our windows and exterior doors are Energy Star rated for thermal efficiency.

  4. 100% PA Wind and Solar electricity.

  5. High-efficiency lighting (LED/CFL bulbs throughout).

  6. Daylighting: the design of our studio uses abundant natural light reflected by light-colored surfaces, minimizing the need for electric lighting.

Natural Resources (conservation of forests, water, etc.):

  1. All of our windows and exterior doors are made of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sustainable wood.

  2. The wood used for both interior and exterior trim is FSC certified Pennsylvania cherry, milled for us by a local craftsman.

  3. Flooring is made of bamboo, a highly renewable material.

  4. Inclusion of salvaged and reused materials and furnishings.

  5. A water-conserving dual-flush toilet.

  6. We use FSC certified and/or high post-consumer content recycled paper in our materials wherever possible.

  7. We recycle.

  8. Space-efficient adaptive re-use of part of a century-old building.

  9. We’ve chosen a bike, transit and pedestrian-friendly location.
